An interesting thing happened to me a couple of days ago. As I drove through a parking lot, a man flagged me down by waving his arms. I rolled down the window as I approached and asked him if he needed help. I assumed he was lost and needed directions. He then proceeded to tell me the story:
“Hey man, I just lost all my money and I need a couple of bucks to buy a phone card to call my brother so he can wire me some money…”
Upon hearing the story, I rolled up my window and drove on. I’ve now officially heard at least a dozen or so variations of this same story. Usually it’s “I ran out of gas” or “I need bus fare” or “I haven’t eaten today” and I know full well that they don’t own a car or have plans to travel or call anyone. What really annoys me is that generally these people are well-fed, perfectly capable of working and simply want a hand out. I’m not sure if this guy needed a booze fix, drug fix, sex fix or some other addiction fix but it really set me off.
It set me off not because this was the tenth time or so over the past few years that this has happened but the fact that on any given day I’m bombarded with requests from many to give more money.
Whether it’s the kids school wanting to sell coupon books, the Girl Scouts selling cookies, the United Way wanting donations, someone selling raffle tickets, some telemarketing group wanting to raise money for xyz, the church wanting their usual tithe plus a bonus collection this week for xyz cause or the local county tax assessor wanting to increase property taxes to give government more money, it’s really starting to drive me crazy. How much money does a person have to give before it stops?
At what point is giving enough? Will schools be happy with 1 million dollars per student? 2 million?
Will the church every say, “Put down your checkbooks folks, we’ve finally solved all the social problems and ills of the world”
Are those of us that work and are productive meant to do nothing else but support those who choose not to work or be productive?
The whole taxation and charitable contribution system is completely broken and I think we now purposely enable people’s lazyness or aversion to work. It’s only a matter of time before the majority of the population realizes this and we begin to have major societal problems. We are seeing the workings of the next great depression in action.

Me and a couple of friends were walking through a parking lot towards a Billoards Hall. We were walking towards this van that was packed with old stuff and you can see it a mile away.
As we got near the van we saw two kids age 10ish eating ice cream. One guy was sleeping on the passenger side with his feet on the dash board.
As we walk pass the lady in the driver seat holding a big ice cream cone waves us down and ask us if we have any money for gas. I look at my friends and we just lied and said we got no change.
After we walked pass all we were thinking about is if you got no money for gas WTF you doing buying ice cream.
