I began using Quicken 2007 about midway through the year last year and I’ve been running some reports to see where my money went. I don’t spend too much time looking at every category but a few that always intrigue me are Energy, Healthcare & Dining.
It seems last year I spent approximately $3,316 on fuel for my auto.
I also spent $4,034 on utilities (electricity and gas).
These are annualized numbers but it’s interesting nonetheless.

How much do you drive and how big is your house? My energy expenses are about 40% but I work at home and have a “starter” size house ( though I plan to finish here as well, minimizing my ultilities and upkeep).
I have never spent that much on auto fuel, but I just calculated that if I still had my old commute I probably would. Fortunately, my longest commutes were when gas was around $1.25/gal.

My home, if I recall correctly, is about 2500 sq ft. two story home. I do have an AC unit that about 15 years old that desperately needs replacing though and that’s a big part of the energy drain. My wife has been on me to caulk the windows too but I don’t believe in air tight housing.
As for driving, I have a gas guzzling SUV and I drive about 30 miles a day. I fill up every 6 to 7 days @ 20 gallons x $2.50/gallon (varies).I am in the market for a couple of new cars though and I had hoped to buy a hybrid vehicle but I’m still waiting to find the right car(s).

Its also “fun” to look at how much your car is costing you per mile you drive.
For example, a Tahoe gets about 14 miles/gal. At $2.79/gal, with a 21 gallon tank, that’s about 20 cent for every mile you drive.
