One of my favorite cartoons growing up as a kid was Looney Tunes’ Road Runner vs. Wile E. Coyote. In the cartoon series, a poor desperate coyote comes up with scheme after scheme to try to score a meal (the Road Runner). Throughout the show & series, Coyote spends a great deal of money, time and resources trying to capture the road runner through a series of elaborate tricks, traps and concoctions only to be left disappointed time after time with an empty belly and a sad face.

I remember as a kid asking my big brother why he didn’t just order some food from Acme Co. and he laughed and said that perhaps he was trying to capture the Road Runner on principle. I didn’t quite understand what he was trying to say but I understand it now.It didn’t matter that the coyote wasn’t achieving the results he wanted to because the only thing that seemed to matter was that he was doing it his way.

This story has a parallel to what happens in the investment world. The road runners are the quick witted capitalists always ahead of the coyote. Whenever a rare opportunity happenstance occurs in which the coyote catches up to the road runner, the bird sticks his tongue out and screams, “beep! beep!” and zooms across the entire country side leaving the coyote eating dust.

What are the characteristics of a coyote?

  • Spending too much time scheming
  • Spending too much money on “tools” to capture something of little or no value.
  • Always falling victim to his own trick, trap or scheme
  • Focusing on the wrong thing - capturing a bird vs. buying a meal
  • Suffering pointlessly in an effort to proclaim victory

What are the characteristics of a road runner?

  • Always one step ahead of the coyote
  • Fast, Carefree yet Astute
  • Opportunistic - Never passes up a free meal
  • Never lets road blocks hamper his progress

So are you a coyote or a road runner?
