A very small percentage of investment managers/advisors have these credentials and each takes hundreds of hours of preparation, therefore they require a lot of commitment. Starting with friends and family is not a bad idea, but if you are looking for a career change then a path towrads these credentials is recommended. In general the CFA is more geared towards investing (and arguably more challenging). The CFP covers a broader set of disciplines (i.e. comprehensive financial planning). Here are some relevant links.
