Borders Closing Store Near My Home

Wow, just a few months after I wrote this post about how useless book stores have become, I got an email today that Borders is closing down the book store near my house. Good riddance! I wish I could say having Borders near my home was beneficial but every time I walked in there they didn’t carry any books I needed. Sure, Borders carried the same garbage every other book store has but not anything I deemed useful.
What perplexes me is why these book stores (Barnes & Noble, Books A Million, Walden books, etc) don’t do anything to distinguish themselves from any other book store. What really perplexes me is why one of these stores doesn’t concentrate on something like “knowledge” where they keep fully stocked books from local colleges’ literature requirements or technical certifications or professional certifications. Hell, I’d settle for one of these book stores to settle on erotica (literature) or mysticism because at least there would be something interesting in there. How many book stores need to be selling Sarah Palin books for god sake?
My last experience with Borders is walking in there with a 50% off coupon and buying a copy of Stephen King’s Under the Dome and it still ended up costing me more than what I could get it at Wal-mart or Costco!
Goodbye Borders, I won’t shed a single tear for your mediocrity.
