At one point I was paying $600/month for full family coverage (medical, dental, vision) and to put it in perspective, my mortgage is currently $650/month (this includes taxes)!

I think one of the biggest problems is that no one wants to "pay" for medical care so we have ended up with this ridiculous insurance system that inflates costs for people without insurance in order to hide the true costs from people with insurance. Without the insurance industry propping up prices doctors and every one else in the medical industry would be forced to charge reasonable prices in order to stay in business.

I also do not need medical insurance to pay for a couple of doctors visits a year and some preventative care. I can afford that (and most people could if the prices were not so inflated). What I need is insurance that covers me if the preventative care finds real problems or I if I have a disaster (say a car accident) that requires a hospital stay or surgery.

BTW I currently pay $522.80 a month for health insurance through the California Marjor Risk Medical insurance program. I am not really happy about paying that much but I pay it so I have some sort of disaster coverage.
