I came here to post what James already said. I usually give in because I don't feel like making life difficult, but I have been seriously reconsidering whether I should ever give out my phone number, zip code, or "show ID" to anyone except as required by law.

I will add though that I have never been asked for my ID at Lowe's or Home Depot to my knowledge, even when buying several hundred dollars worth of stuff on a credit card.

If you were paying with a credit card, asking for secondary ID is actually against the rules for processing credit cards. Report them to the credit card company.
