I have often said the next people to become dis-intermediated will be real estate agents and mortgage brokers. People are already switching from the MLS to Craig's List, so the little monopoly is disappearing.

Regarding health care, I think insurance companies are going to get the boot. They provide no health care benefit and take a fat share of the profits for rejecting our claims and screwing up papework. Look for direct providers like Kaiser to take over, if the government doesn't.

The analogy between real estate agents and travel agents seems very apt. Both are/were getting paid outrageous commissions when you look at the work they were actually doing. For a buyer's real estate agent especially, the 3% fee is outrageous, considering what they actually do, i.e. basically drive you around and open doors with their special key.

It seems inevitable that something on the internet is going to come along to destroy the profession, ala travel websites vis a vis travel agents. Unfortunately, it seems like these types of internet startups are rarely open to public investment.
