Why Are Shops Dumping American Express?

Having dealt with many retailers for a while, I know American Express has traditionally charged higher fees to merchants for processing transactions but I’ve been recently encountering more and more shops dumping American Express. The biggest chain that I’ve seen doing this is Subway. I’m guessing it’s the independent franchises that are dumping the card to preserve cash flow and reduce fee exposure as food and labor costs continue to increase.
I’m wondering if this is why American Express had poor results this past quarter vs. simply being a “tapped” out consumer. I’ve encountered problems with AMEX at discount outlet stores, fast food chains, and independent shops simply not taking Amex anymore.
Food for thought.

I have an AmEx Blue, which I understand gives good rewards. however, not being accepted as widely as Visa keeps me from using it as my primary card.

The Subway and Quiznos by me takes American Express. Some subways are really shady in that they don’t use the same CC processor as the others and make you sign for the purchase (which generally isn’t suppose to happen for purchases under $25).

I noticed this too…espically the smaller merchants don’t like AMEX. Their merchant fees are atleast a couple of % points higher than VISA or mastercard.

Those few percentage points add up over time. I tried to pay a deposit when I shopped for my car with my Amex but they wouldn’t accept it. They claimed that they would pay more in fees than they would get in profit. They were probably right too.

I use my Am Ex platinum card as my main business card, but I’m starting to see that I have to stick with the larger gas stations because the smaller ones don’t accept it, which is irritating because, of course, they charge less for the gas.
