Will Anyone Have A Job In 10 Months?

I spoke to family and friends this weekend regarding my recent termination. I found out my sister in law was laid off last week. I also learned that almost everyone in my family and various friends are nervous about layoffs at their place of employment.
The remarkable thing here is that everyone in my family and friends work in fairly unique industries in different locations around the country. It is remarkable that the job layoffs come from all across the board. We’ve seen the disintegration of construction, housing, banking, and real estate jobs over the past two years but now we’re on a whole new wave of job losses tied to industries such as retail, energy, engineering, and other white collar jobs.
With most cities and states facing huge shortfalls, I think it’s only a matter of time before government jobs start to go and I’m wondering if anyone will have a job in 10 months.

I do not have any fear for my job, but I work on a critical system for a power company…

Don’t forget about problems in the travel industry and an advertising slowdown. It’s no wonder that some people are forecasting unemployment in the double digits – above 10%.
Sorry to hear about your job loss! I’ve had it happen to me a couple times and its not fun. Fortunately, I’ve managed to find a job that I enjoy even more to replace it. Hope that happens with you as well!

I’m feeling very lucky that both my wife and I work for the federal government. Our jobs are looking very secure right now even though we are contractors and normally they would be the first to go. In fact, the entire DC area so far hasn’t felt too much pain from the recession.
Here’s keeping my fingers crossed that it holds….
