Our jobs are looking very secure right now even though we are contractors and normally they would be the first to go. In fact, the entire DC area so far hasn't felt too much pain from the recession. It's no wonder that some people are forecasting unemployment in the double digits - above 10%. Sorry to hear about your job loss! I've had it happen to me a couple times and its not fun.
