Efficiency would be more highly possible if the post office as an organization wasn't legally barred from such horrid measures as closing unprofitable locations. With such an idiotic decision legally enforced at that level I can only imagine the lack of incentive to improve any other processes.

The Post Office is no longer part of the government. It's a separate entity with congressional oversight. So that's a fallacious argument. (Full disclosure: I have many friends in gov't service b/c I work in DC. I resemble your remark.)

The service at most post offices sucks. If you don't like it, call the postmaster general there. It is his job to address your complaints. I have no idea what he will tell you, but I've seen their computers and they are some the oldest hardware I've ever seen. (Only banks are worse! COBOL? VAX? Why are they still using that stuff?)

Best post office is in DC that used to be 24 hours. We'd go around midnight and there would be pretty fast service. In and out in like 10 minutes with our eBay shipments. But they close early now due to cutbacks. *weep* However, the service is still pretty swift compared to other ones I've been to in suburban DC.

You know the answer. You know who runs the Post Office. If UPS or Fedex could run a first class mail postal center....
