I haven’t been able to build apps lately since I’ve been extremely busy at work however necessity is the mother of invention and I had an annoying problem that I needed to fix so I sat down this past weekend and developed a new app to manage ex-dividend calendar.
The ex-dividend date is the date you need to own shares in order to receive the expected dividend. As an example, SCHD has an ex-dividend date of March 25, 2026 so if you want to collect that dividend you need to buy shares BEFORE that date. It’s important to note that it can take up to two days for the transaction to settle and be reflected in records so to be safe, placing a trade two days BEFORE the ex-dividend date is ideal. Today (Monday March 23) is the day to buy!
Since I am tracking so many tickers it has become cumbersome to figure out the ex-dividend dates for all the equities I own or plan on purchasing. I created an app that I can run whenever I want and it pulls all the current ex-dividend dates and creates an HTML calendar file. It also creates .ics files which I can open and add to my calendar so I don’t forget!
I plan on enhancing this calendar to show money flows as well at some point in the future so I know exactly how much money I can expect on any given day in a month.
