This past weekend I went to Home Depot and bought some seeds and soil for a home garden. Over the years I have gardened on & off largely growing small veggies but mostly herbs for my kitchen. Unless you’re a farmer, the math for home grown veggies almost NEVER works in favor of the home gardener.
I already spent $150 on seeds and soil and gardening supplies. I was a bit shocked at the prices of plants, soil and other things at Home Depot. As bad as that was, the real cost of a garden is the labor to start and maintain your garden which most people discount to $0. Considering that I made over $100k+ last year trading stocks/options, my time is worth far more than zero.
So why start a garden?
Most people are completely oblivious to what *may* happen if the Iran situation isn’t sorted out. There WILL be shortages of food, fertilizer, fuel, and many other things. My garden won’t keep me from starving, I have a well stocked pantry with rice, beans, canned goods, and a freezer full of food. I also have a 1 year supply of emergency meals that will keep us fed for at least a year or longer.
The things I planted are things that I think may be difficult to import should inflation go out of control or fuel supplies start running low. I planted cucumbers, thai basil, coriander, green onions, regular onions, mogwart, rosemary, lemon balm, spearmint, and a few other things. I do plan on expanding my garden with tomatoes and other things once it gets a bit warmer. Most of these veggies end up paired with meats, rices or beans that I cook at home to complete my cooking.
I have also decided that my new hobby is going to be growing trees. I already ordered 200 seeds of a very specific tree that was selling for $200 at the local nursery. They only had 1 tree in stock and it looked kinda sickly. If these trees are that popular then I might be able to sell them for half that and make a tidy profit. No, I won’t be telling you the kind of tree it is but it is somewhat rare for this area and I happen to like it quite a bit so if they don’t sell, I’ll plant them around my estate.
