When I tell people I plan on leaving the United States I get two types of responses: incredulity or affirmation.
The people that are incredulous don’t want to accept that anyone would want to move outside of the United States. After all why would anyone want to leave the greatest country on earth? I often can’t really continue to discuss anything with these types of people because they’ve already made up their mind and continuing any discussion further would be like discussing it with a foot stool. The funny thing is these people, most of which have never been overseas, tell me about all the negative things they hear: crime, poverty, lack of infrastructure, lack goods and services and poor healthcare.
I usually finish the discussion with “if you’re happy here then keep going” or “moving to different places isn’t for everyone” and leave it at that. Sadly, I think most of these folks will end up like the guy on this video and I certainly am sympathetic and it’s a reason why I don’t want to end up in the same situation.
The other group understands perfectly the reasons and benefits of moving overseas and the sacrifices you do make in doing so. I’ve primarily worked for multi-national companies the last 15 years of my life often traveling overseas for work. I’ve seen amazing train transportation systems across Asia, excellent local public transportation in Europe and better healthcare access & lower cost of living and higher quality of life in many places. I am also aware of the growing demographic crisis in the United States that has the potential to lower the quality of life for everyone here left behind. The fact that we have dwindling family here is yet another reason that frees us up to not feel guilty about leaving family behind.
These discussions however have given me a really great business idea that I’m now researching and maybe will implement when I retire. I’m doing research now and leveraging AI to build a mindmap around all the possible business growth opportunities around it.
