For my younger readers you probably don’t know what a BBS is nor a 1200 baud modem but that was essentially the “Internet” before we had Internet. You had a computer, you hooked up a phone line to your PC with a modem, it made funky noises when connecting then you had a slow text connection with some other computer somewhere. You had to make sure it was a local call otherwise you would have a huge telephone bill.
To understand the experience the 1983 movie War Games starring Mathew Broderick has all the “high tech” that existed back in the 80s. Real high speed internet wouldn’t happen till 20 years later and most people didn’t have any kind of connected computer during the first two decades. By 2000 and the “dot com” era, most people had some type of Internet connection, you really couldn’t live life without it as business models moved online.
Can You Live Without Internet?
I am sure there are quite a few people that live without Internet, especially high speed, and I suspect those people are either living in rural areas, too poor or too elderly to afford it or just have no utility for it.
But if you are someone that relies on the Internet heavily for most of the things you do day to day, would you be willing to give it up? I suspect probably not.
AI Agents – The Next Must Have Technology
I am going to make a bold prediction. Within 5 years, AI agents are going to be the must-have technology much like basic Internet connectivity is a must have technology today.
It may not even take that long at the rate the technology is accelerating, it may be 3 years at the rate things are going.
I haven’t done a Google “search” since AI came out. I now simply go to my AI chat bot but lately I don’t even bother with Chatbots as I just go to my AI agents, give it a task and tell it where to put the output. I’ve created entire trip itineraries and skipped hours of research and google searches online by delegating the task to my agent.
I now have autonomous trading bots making trades for me.
I just went back to research something on this blog and I found this post I wrote in April 2 describing how I was using ChatBots to aggregate research. That was a whopping two months ago and I’ve already changed the way I do research. Now I just task my AI agent to create a report complete with investing options on any topic I come across.
Space X is all the rage? “Agent, find me all the alternative ways I can make money off the Space X euphoria without buying Space X stock.”
A few minutes then Bam! I get a complete full report that would have taken an hour using a ChatBot.
I’m not advanced as some other people out there that are now making entire movies using AI only costing $2000 and winning awards but I am getting there.
If push comes to shove and I need to cut back on my expenses, it will be streaming services like Spotify or Netflix that I’ll cut first over my AI agents. Heck, I’d dump my iPhone in a heartbeat for a truly AI agent built smartphone. “Apps” are going to become obsolete because “agents” can do the work instead of me doing the work.
I don’t want to live in a world where I have to logon to Expedia, use my Microsoft Authentication app or receive a text for an authenticated two factor message then scroll through hundreds of options for air, hotel, car, dining, etc. when I can just tell my AI agent to book me a two week European holiday from Paris to Rome and have it do everything for me and it understands all my preferences, credit cards point rewards, and everything else. See where this is going yet?
AI: The Haves and Have Nots
Just like the lack of affordable and available high speed Internet set many disadvantaged people behind, this new AI technology will do the same. I predict that kids across school will be making fun of each other over what AI stack they have or don’t have.
Kids in school playground:
Rich kid: “I just got the new Nimbus 2000 AI agents stack, now they do all my homework, invest my allowance, and book all my summer travel for me!”
Poor kid: “I’m still using the Firebolt AI stack cuz that’s all we can afford right now. It can scrape coupons off the ‘net so we can save a ton on groceries.”
Politicians will attempt to level the playing field like they did with blue bubbles over green bubbles but it won’t matter.
AI vs Internet Timelines
I asked a ChatBot to create a timeline comparison of the Internet to AI.

Each phase took about 10 years to mature. If the comparison is correct, the next 10 years in AI will be truly revolutionary as the last 10 years of high speed Internet were truly revolutionary with the technology finally enabling things like video calling, streaming, and the foundational networking to make AI function.
