I’m getting ready to travel to Europe for the next few months and coincidentally I got a text from T-mobile that my plan was being retired and there would be a price increase of $6 (x3) to my new plan that I didn’t ask for nor wanted.
I’ve been with T-mobile for at least 15 years and all I’ve ever gotten the past few years are price increases and “benefits” that I had no use for such as a bloated ad filled Netflix subscription, AAA subscriptions? (I already have it!). You can read about T-mobile betraying 8 million customers here.
After doing some research I am opting for Tello as my new carrier, it took 5 minutes to port my number over. It doesn’t have all the bells and whistles that T-mobile has but it does have about a 62% savings in cost. My T-Mobile plan was $60/month (BEFORE the $6 hike) and my new plan is $25/month. That’s an annual change from $792 to $$300. Ironically, it’s the same carrier providing the service. I will be using those savings for my AI agents 🙂
The main benefit I kept T-mobile for was overseas data use but since I will be gone a long time, it’s likely they will cut me off at some point anyway. Tello won’t work without wifi overseas but my plan is to get a local data sim card that will enable VOIP calling on my Tello. I am going to test Airalo and Saily while I’m traveling to Europe to test their capability.
Many digital nomads and expats that have left the U.S. seem to use Tello as their carrier to enable two factor authentication for banking and other online services. This will be a great way for me to test it for my own overseas retirement purposes as well.
T-mobile has grown quite arrogant over the past few years and I suspect I won’t be the only one dropping them as a carrier but we’ll see how their prices increases go over the next 12 months.
It’s not you T-mobile, it’s me, and I’m sick of you. I’m sure there’s someone out there for you as there are plenty of mobile fish in the sea.
