The Dailymail has an article out claiming it will cost NFL fans $1600 to watch all the NFL games next season. Ouch. The good news is that I don’t watch football other than the Super Bowl. I don’t have 3+ hours to waste watching football per game and it’s time I’d rather spend on investment research or other things so it doesn’t really impact me too much other than the cost of those streaming services going up to subsidize football.
Of course, the NFL has magically managed to optimize their portfolio by spreading the games onto as many services as possible to generate revenue.
According to the article you’ll need some type of cable TV service which may cost about $900 per year.
Next you’ll may need the NFL Sunday Ticket from YouTube for $389/season.
And you may need an Amazon Prime Video subscription at $139/year.
You may also want ESPN+ for $99/year.
And finally round out the streaming services with Peacock and NFL+ for $60 and $40, respectively.
And if you want to watch the Christmas games on Netflix, add $7/month subscription for that game too.
Boy it sure feels like the old cable subscription model that carried most of the games was a far better value back in the day but those days are dying fast in favor of new streaming services business models.
2024 will be a great benchmark for pricing the NFL because the way inflation continues to climb it may be the last time fans watch an entire full season as the costs become prohibitive over time.
It does make me wonder if we will have “pirate” networks start streaming these things illegally in the future. I think people would rather pay $99 to a pirate streamer to watch the full season than $1600 but only time will tell.
Ironically, so many people were swearing off football and the NFL a few years ago with the whole Colin Kaepernick controversy that there were predictions of its imminent bankruptcy. Well here we are a few years and $1600 later and it is still going strong.
