For 2026 I have been watching every single penny I spend. I plan on retiring soon so it’s important to know where every single dollar is going. For the month of April I spent $4500 and $1200 of that was groceries.
The infuriating thing is that I am eating way less food now that I’m taking Zepbound so we don’t buy junk food. Most of our groceries are meats and veggies/fruits. I bake my own bread and flour and related ingredients are fairly cheap. I haven’t done a deep analysis in what is triggering the costs but I suspect beef and lamb are a main culprit as those are often the most expensive items in our cart.
What frightens me is that oil and specifically, diesel fuel has been extremely expensive since this non-war war with Iran has started. Diesel is used by every truck to deliver everything across America from the farm or factory to the retail outlet or grocery store so that means the longer this non-war lasts, the higher the inflation now and later down the road.
The other major expense in that $4500 spend was insurance. April happens to be the month I get hit for the 6 month auto charge for insurance. November is the month I get hit with home owners insurance and that bill is approaching $4500 on its own.
I’ll do a detailed breakdown post at some point in the future and may get AI to build me a better dashboard but I know food is a major issue right now. My garden has started to yield some herbs and I expect a harvest in a few more weeks of tomatoes and other things I’ve planted.
