The family has been complaining again about slow WiFi again. I don’t blame them, since I had AI initially help me save $1000 on new mesh network back in January, I’ve added an AI lab, a dedicated laptop for AI agents, and some other tech to the house. AI also helped fix my firewall for plex.
I copied the configs/settings of my wifi access points and uploaded them to AI and asked for any other suggestions to improve the settings. It did give me a few setting changes but it told me one of my access points (an old recycled router) was way too old and had a buggy chipset and the most economical solution was to simply replace the access point. It recommended one and it’s on order and will be in next week.
I will write a follow up post once I set everything up and I’ll likely need AI to help me configure the perfect settings to maximize bandwidth in my house but once again, AI has paid for itself. No need to hire a tech person to come to my house, no need to call anyone, no need to spend time on hold, just instant access to a system that has access to everything on the planet.
Total Dependency?
As great as AI is I am starting to worry that this is leading me to become ultra lazy. For example, I no longer read tech manuals, I just ask AI to walk me through the setup. I also do that with most of the AI things I install or create. I now see a feature in ChatGPT where it displays products to buy when you need something related to the topic you’re researching.
It’s only a matter of time every digital product you buy will come with a QR code that will activate the AI bot for that manufacturer.
Bought a new chainsaw? Scan the QR code and have an AI bot walk you through setting it up.
I don’t know where all of this well end but people have been doom scrolling on their smartphone now for years and with AI able to create an infinite number of things online, the saturation will be endless.
Sadly, there will be many people left behind. In many places in rural America, fast Internet is rarely available and now AI connected agents/bots will likely not be available either leaving people further behind. After that, robots will be the next thing that gets left behind in rural areas.
