My de-cluttering project has slowed. There are too many books, photo frames, and other objects that have “sentimental” value to my wife that it’s make the process slow. We talked about moving things to storage but I can already see that this stuff will sit there in storage for years before it ever gets touched again and it makes me think it’s a waste.
Many of the items have some use for someone so we really should be making a trip to the Good Will or other charity. I’ve thought about selling stuff on eBay but I honestly don’t want to spend time shipping and haggling with someone over stuff if it breaks along the way.
Most of my stuff is digital and the clutter I have involves wiping all the backup disks I accumulated over the years then getting that electronic stuff recycled. We have 25 years of digital photos, videos, music and other things but those are easy to carry around or put in a storage array.
I’m not sure what to do now but it does look like we will simply need to downside our house and move into a smaller two bedroom condo. We can turn our current residence into a rental property, have our daughter move into the condo with our stuff while we move overseas.
We’re still about a year away from all of this but the de-cluttering is taking a lot longer than I expected. We’ve managed to clear one room and one closet but have 8 more rooms to go and I feel like giving up.
I am considering simply having an open house and have people just take what they want once we clear out the stuff we’re keeping or do a garage sale but all of those things take time and planning to be truly successful.
When I look at all the “stuff” we bought over the years, it makes me cringe. Aside from the fact that all of this stuff cost money and it meant a lost opportunity of investing that money, it’s also about the sheer waste of all the stuff that gets produced, used for a short time frame then becomes clutter or trash.
As a society and culture, we’re all doomed if we keep going this way.
