I love AI and AI agents but cost is becoming a big concern. The truth of the matter is that AI is heavily subsidized by AI companies. I’ve read somewhere that the true cost for AI activities on a $20 chatbot people use everyday is $12,000 to $15,000 per year which would put the true cost of AI at about $300/month.
If AI companies start charging $300/month for AI use then I would need to move to alternative solutions, even home brewed solutions.
AMD To The Rescue?
AMD recently announced the release of its AI Halo MINI PC which can perform the following (from link):

- AMD Ryzen AI Max PRO 400 Series processors power commercial AI PCs that handle advanced AI and visual computing on a single system, reducing the need for discrete GPUs or cloud-based compute.
I definitely want one of these computers and it’s on my Christmas wish list. I wanted to order one but I am going away for the summer to Europe and other places so it would be sitting in a box until I came back. I will watch the reviews and YouTube videos closely on what the community says about this little but powerful computer. The Halo is available from Microcenter here.
The potential here is to have this computer perform most AI functions locally at home and ditch the subscriptions from the big three. I’m certain I would still need some capabilities from the subscription services but if I can cut down token use by 80% then it’s a prudent financial decision to spend the $4000.
I am currently paying $60/month for 3 subs + token usage which seems to be running at $100/month. A one-time $4000 is $333/month over 12 months or $166/month over 24 months or $111/month over 36 months. The calculus comes down to how long will it take for this Mini PC to become obsolete? If it’s 3 years then it’s a bargain, if it’s one year then I’m better off with the subscriptions unless the subscription price goes up.
Ironically, I expect AMD’s computing cost to go down while I expect AI subscriptions to likely go up in cost so at some point there will be an easy decision to buy my own hardware vs leasing AI compute from providers.
Competition
There is also the possibility that other PC manufacturers get in on this and start offering their own AI PCs with better cost options. I’d love to see NVIDIA come out with something similar or better and maybe they will at some point.
When I get back from vacation I will ask AI what the best AI computers are out there and a recommendation for the best bang for the buck option.
